What has been the greatest challenge in your career?

I’d say there are 3 –

Embracing advancements in plastics manufacturing technologies and materials is essential for maintaining competitiveness. Keeping up with the latest technologies and integrating them into existing processes can be a significant challenge, and I guess change management is related to this challenge.

Attracting and retaining skilled talent is crucial for any organisation’s success. I’ve always strived to create a positive work culture, provide opportunities for professional growth, and address workforce challenges, such as skills gaps.

But most of all – communication! Trying to get everyone to understand that excellent communication is vital to the success of any business cannot be comprehended by all…

What advice do you wish you’d had on entering the industry and does that differ from the advice you would give to an apprentice joining now?

As someone entering the plastics industry, I wish I had received the radical advice to challenge the status quo and disrupt traditional practices. The plastics industry has long been criticised for its negative environmental impact, and as a newcomer, I would have encouraged myself to question conventional methods and actively seek sustainable alternatives. Promoting the benefits of the plastics industry and educating all who question its environmental impact.

The advice for both past me and the current apprentice is to be a sustainability champion within the plastics industry. Embrace innovation, challenge traditional practices, and actively contribute to reshaping the industry’s narrative towards a more sustainable and environmentally responsible future. By doing so, you can create a positive impact, not only on the industry but also on the well-being of our planet.

What hidden talents do you have?

I used to be a dancer in a night club in Torquay when I was in my late teens / early 20’s – often seen ‘throwing some shapes’ to some early 90’s dance music!
