KraussMaffei UK has supported Matrix Plastics Ltd in delivering a first-of-its-kind cleanroom colour compounding facility for the medical sector. Based in Slough, Berkshire, Matrix Plastics has over 30 years of expertise in masterbatch and colour compounding and has now launched a dedicated division – Matrix Medical Materials – to serve the growing needs of the MedTech market.

To support this expansion, Matrix Plastics invested in a purpose-built ISO 13485:2016 certified cleanroom and manufacturing space. KraussMaffei was chosen as a key equipment partner, supplying a PX 50 injection moulding machine suitable for Class 7 cleanroom operation and offering full project management support from initial specification through to installation and commissioning.

Richard Mumford, Sales Director at KraussMaffei UK, commented: “Matrix Plastics had a clear vision for what they wanted to achieve. Our role was to deliver the right technology, expertise and support structure to make that vision a reality. We’re proud to have played a part in helping bring a completely new capability to the UK medical manufacturing supply chain.”

With the PX 50 in place, Matrix can now support customers through the full development cycle (Figure 2) – from material selection and colour matching to prototype tooling, part production, and regulatory support. All services are delivered under one roof, within a cleanroom facility designed to meet ISO Class 7 standards.

This investment has significantly expanded Matrix’s ability to serve the medical sector, including applications in drug delivery, diagnostics, and surgical equipment. The company now works with OEMs and processors to deliver high-performance, regulatory- compliant materials and parts, with additional support for ISO 10993 validation, USP Class VI compliance, and biocompatibility testing.

Proven Growth in the MedTech Sector

Since launching its cleanroom initiative, Matrix Medical Materials has seen rapid growth. The new facility has enabled faster product development timelines and given customers access to a trusted UK-based partner for both materials and sample production. In turn, this has strengthened Matrix Plastics’ position as a leader in technical colour solutions for regulated markets.

Nigel Batt, Managing Director at Matrix Plastics, said: “This partnership with KraussMaffei has been built over the last 12-15 months. KraussMaffei’s commitment to working with Matrix Plastics has enabled us to offer our customers a complete service under one roof. The purchase of the latest KraussMaffei PX50 at the end of 2023 was a key step in the development of the facility, enabling us to benefit from the knowledge they brought to the partnership.”
