Oadby Plastics, home to one of the UK’s largest plastics machining facilities, has taken a major step forward in its sustainability journey by partnering with Noble Green Energy to significantly expand its on-site solar power generation.

Operating from over 225,000 sq. ft. of manufacturing and distribution space at its Leicester Head Office, Oadby Plastics first embraced solar back in 2015. What began as a 10 kW system – installed to meet planning requirements for a site redevelopment – following consultation with our team soon evolved into a 250 kW investment. The success of this initial expansion laid the groundwork for a further commitment to clean energy.

In 2023, Noble Green Energy returned to install an additional 270 kW solar PV array, bringing the total system size to 520 kWp. With a carefully engineered export limitation, the system remains within the permitted 200 kW export threshold – while still delivering impressive energy savings.

Now, approximately 75% of all solar-generated power is consumed on site, helping Oadby Plastics shield itself from rising energy costs and reduce its reliance on fossil fuels. With current energy prices, the payback period for the latest phase of the project is forecast to be less than four years.

The solar PV project was driven by several clear objectives:

  • Reduce operational energy costs
  • Increase energy independence and resilience
  • Meet customer expectations for sustainable production
  • Support the UK’s renewable energy goals

By working with Noble Green Energy, Oadby Plastics is now generating over 466,000 kWh annually through clean, renewable energy.

Oadby Plastics’ Finance Director, Jit Chouhan, comments: “The collaboration and the design of the system was done with the utmost professionalism. We were so happy with the performance of the solar PV system that we asked Noble Green Energy to install solar panels on another two of our factories.

James Pullin, General Manager of Noble Green Energy said: “It’s been great to work with Oadby Plastics as they’ve grown their solar capacity over the years. What started as a small system to meet planning requirements has turned into a smart, long-term energy investment. They’re now generating a huge part of their electricity on site, in a way that makes both commercial and environmental sense.
