Omega Plastics Group’s Managing Director, Dave Crone, has announced that, after nearly 30 years with the business, he will be selling his shares and stepping back from his role as Group Managing Director, while remaining involved in a part-time advisory capacity for an initial six-month period.
Dave said the decision followed his recent 66th birthday and marked an important milestone after what he described as a lifelong passion for the business. He also confirmed that the transition has been carefully planned and includes significant additional investment to support the next phase of the company’s development.
As part of the transaction, Omega Plastics Group has been acquired by Chris Thompson and Mark Thornton, both of whom have historical ties to the business. Chris Thompson was instrumental in the original introduction of Omega Plastics to the UK in the late 1990s and remained a shareholder and partner until stepping away in 2024 to focus on a full-time CEO role at Express Engineering Group. He has now moved into a Non-Executive Chair role and is returning to Omega. Mark Thornton, who was part of the executive team in 2019 and 2020, is also re-joining the team and co-investing alongside Chris.
Dave said: “Fundamental to my wish to retire was ensuring that Omega Plastics Group secured the correct leadership and investment to support its long-term objectives and sustainability. After detailed discussions with Chris and Mark it was clear they shared the same vision, were supportive of the needs of the business and through Chris’ ownership of the Gateshead facility they were also able to provide additional benefits that their ownership could bring to a single site operation.”
The investment will provide increased working capital and additional funding to support a planned move to a single site in Gateshead. The business said this is intended to improve efficiencies, create better internal synergy and enhance service levels, while product quality and continuity of supply remain the highest priorities during the transition.
Gary Owen, Finance Director, and Ian Mallett, Operations Director, will remain in their roles to provide continuity. Dave will continue to support the business for one day per week over an initial six-month period, providing support to Chris, Mark, Ian, Gary and the wider management team.
