Industry 4.0 and Automation Driving Rutland Plastics’ Future Growth
As Rutland Plastics approaches its 70th anniversary, the company continues to look to the future, proving that age is no barrier to innovation. With a strong focus on technology, efficiency, and sustainability, the business continues to invest in solutions to improve operational performance and environmental responsibility.
Industry 4.0 and Digital Transformation
Rutland Plastics has made significant strides in adopting Industry 4.0 technologies. The company has heavily invested in the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and implemented a cloud-based ERP system to streamline operations and enable real-time decision-making. Most recently, a real-time energy monitoring system has been installed to track machine performance, identify efficiency opportunities, and calculate the carbon footprint of each machine with precision.
As part of its commitment to digital transformation, Rutland Plastics secured a government grant in 2024 through the Made Smarter programme. This funding supported the acquisition of a portable Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM), enhancing quality control and measurement capabilities on the shop floor.
Independent Recognition of Digital Maturity
An independent digital readiness review, conducted as part of the Made Smarter project, highlighted Rutland Plastics’ impressive progress. The company achieved a score of 7 on the PAS1040 digital maturity scale, reflecting a near-optimal integration of digital technologies across its operations.
The review noted: “Rutland Plastics has distinguished itself in digital transformation… from advanced automation in their production lines to the implementation of sophisticated data analytics for predictive maintenance and quality control. Their journey has not only enhanced operational efficiency and product quality but also significantly reduced environmental impact through optimised resource use and waste reduction.”
Epicor’s Manufacturing Champion
Further recognition came from Epicor, the company’s ERP provider, which named Rutland Plastics as its Manufacturing Champion. Epicor praised the implementation of Advanced MES (Manufacturing Execution System), which has revolutionised shop floor operations by enabling the monitoring of Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE), run rates, scrap, yield, and energy consumption.
Epicor commented: “The Rutland Plastics team have excelled in their focus on enabling efficiency and quality while providing real-time analysis for optimal production performance. Their use of Epicor Mobile Warehouse has also enhanced workflow and inventory management. Rutland Plastics demonstrate that quality production and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand.”
Automation and Continued Development
As part of ongoing automation efforts, Rutland Plastics is currently developing a bespoke automation cell. This new setup combines two collaborative robots with a conveyor system to automate the packing of customer products directly at the moulding machines. The result will be improved consistency, efficiency, and quality—all delivered right at the point of production.
With a strong heritage behind them and a clear focus on future growth, Rutland Plastics continues to set a benchmark for innovation in British manufacturing. Their commitment to sustainability, investment in smart technologies, and drive for continuous improvement ensure they remain at the forefront of the injection moulding industry.
