
Sterling Ancillary Services Restores Plastics Facility to Full Production

Independent service engineers provide a unique and highly skilled service. A recent example was the collaboration between Steve Payne of Sterling Ancillary Services (SAS) and Chris O’Neill of OPES.
Following a call to SAS from a new customer seeking urgent engineering support, it was clear that a joint approach was the most effective solution. The customer had been searching for over two months to find engineers to repaire and service a range of equipment. After contacting SAS through the PlastikCity procurement platform, a site visit was arranged to assess the situation. The scale of the issues soon became evident, with multiple machines across different brands requiring attention.
After a two-day visit, repairs and servicing were carried out on a BOY injection moulding machine, an STV chiller and TCUs, Hester blow moulding machines, pelletisers, and air compressors. The challenges required expertise across hydraulics, electrical control circuits, electronics, mechanical engineering, and plastics processing.
Both Steve Payne and Chris O’Neill bring decades of experience, having first worked together in the 1980s at Thomas & Betts before continuing their careers in the plastics sector. The shared knowledge between them, combined with their understanding of spare parts sourcing and repair options, led to them delivering a cost-effective and comprehensive solution for the customer.
In addition to completing the repairs, there was time to advise on improvements to the factory layout and preventative maintenance strategies. Further visits are already planned to support efficiency gains.
In total, six brands and five types of machines were serviced and repaired, getting the customer back into full production. This collaborative approach demonstrates the value of UNISERVICE, where multi-brand, multi-machine problems are solved efficiently by independent specialists.
