For more than 20 years, Impact Solutions has supported businesses across the plastics and polymer sectors with technical expertise focused on solving real-world material challenges. From mechanical testing and failure analysis to material analysis and characterisation, Impact Solutions has built a strong reputation for helping customers better understand how materials behave in demanding commercial environments. At Interplas 2026, the company will be showcasing how Impact-Bio® is supporting organisations navigating one of the biggest transitions currently facing the plastics sector.

Working across industries including packaging, automotive, medical, consumer goods and industrial manufacturing, Impact Solutions has always focused on delivering practical, evidence-based insight that helps businesses improve performance, reduce risk and accelerate product development.

Tightening regulations, sustainability commitments and increasing scrutiny around environmental claims are reshaping how companies approach material selection. This shift is reflected in the conversations happening with customers every day. Alongside performance requirements, there is a growing demand for bio-based and biodegradable material solutions that can support compliance, innovation and sustainability goals.

In response to this demand, Impact Solutions launched Impact-Bio® at the end of 2025, a dedicated offering designed to help businesses evaluate and implement bio-based materials with greater technical confidence.

The Growing Challenge Around Sustainable Materials

For manufacturers, identifying a material with strong sustainability credentials is only part of the challenge. The material must also work effectively within the realities of production and end-use performance.

Not all bio-based materials perform in the same way, and many businesses are still trying to understand how these materials behave in real manufacturing conditions. Processing performance, compatibility with existing equipment, durability, regulatory compliance and long-term reliability all remain critical considerations.

This is where technical evaluation becomes essential.

Impact-Bio®: Biodegradability Testing at Impact Solutions

Many organisations are keen to explore new materials but face uncertainty around the current industry landscape. With increasing scrutiny surrounding greenwashing and unvalidated sustainability claims, businesses need independent technical support to assess material performance, understand regulatory requirements, and identify the claims they can make (and back up) before committing significant development time or investment.

Impact-Bio® cuts through the complexity of evolving standards and certification frameworks, translating technical and regulatory requirements into clear, actionable strategies. This guidance helps you select appropriate biodegradability tests and generate robust, defensible data to support market access and compliance.

This service builds on the company’s broader experience in polymers, testing and materials analysis, combining this expertise with a dedicated focus on sustainable material assessment.

Whether a client is validating a new bioplastic, preparing for certification, or comparing material formulations, Impact-Bio® offers tailored performance testing and support from the initial consultation, all the way through to providing comprehensive results and reporting.

A Practical Approach to Bio-Based Material Evaluation

A key focus of Impact-Bio® is helping businesses reduce uncertainty during the material selection process.

The service supports customers through a range of technical activities, including standard biodegradation testing, material evaluation, analytical testing, comparative analysis, and performance validation. By generating practical data around how materials behave under specific conditions, Impact Solutions helps manufacturers better understand whether a particular bio-based solution is suitable for their intended application.

Importantly, the approach remains commercially and operationally focused.

There is currently no single sustainable material capable of solving every challenge across every application. Different products, sectors and manufacturing environments require different solutions and successful implementation depends on balancing environmental objectives with technical and commercial realities.

Impact Solutions believes sustainable innovation must be grounded in practical performance rather than assumptions or marketing claims. That means helping customers understand not only the potential advantages of a material, but also any limitations, processing considerations or performance implications that may need to be addressed during development.

Accelerating Development with Rapid Screening

Alongside its broader sustainable materials work, Impact Solutions is continuing to develop Impact-Bio® Rapid Screening, a service designed to provide fast, early-stage insight into the biodegradation potential of emerging materials.

Unlike traditional biodegradation studies, which can take months to complete, rapid screening provides indicative results in as little as three days. The approach allows manufacturers to assess whether a material is likely to perform well in standardised testing before committing to longer and more resource-intensive qualification programmes.

The screening methodology has been developed to provide indicative biodegradability assessment within a specified end-of-life environment and has demonstrated strong correlation with recognised OECD 301 Ready Biodegradability Test classifications across a broad range of material chemistries, including small molecules, proteins and water-soluble polymers.

For manufacturers evaluating multiple formulations or material candidates, the service supports high-throughput analysis, enabling larger sample volumes to be assessed efficiently during early-stage development. This can help narrow down material portfolios more quickly, identify potential performance limitations earlier and reduce unnecessary development work.

By generating robust biodegradability data earlier in the formulation process, rapid screening also allows businesses to progress into standard testing with greater technical confidence. The approach supports faster prototyping, more informed formulation decisions and a clearer understanding of material behaviour before significant investment in scale-up or qualification begins.

As end-of-life assessment continues to evolve across the plastics sector, the ability to access rapid, application-focused biodegradability insight is becoming an increasingly valuable tool during sustainable material development.

Looking Ahead to Interplas 2026

Exhibiting at Interplas 2026, the Impact Solutions team will be at hand to discuss the challenges and opportunities surrounding sustainable materials with manufacturers from across the plastics sector.

Visitors to the stand will be able to learn more about the Impact-Bio® offering, explore the company’s rapid screening capabilities and discuss how technical testing and material evaluation can support more confident decision-making around sustainable material adoption.

Impact Solutions will also be highlighting the importance of faster material evaluation at Interplas 2026 through a presentation from colleague Dr Sam Patterson, taking place on Wednesday 3rd June.

Sam will be speaking on the topic, “Unlocking innovation: Rapid assessment of biodegradable plastics”, exploring how accelerated testing and early-stage material assessment can help manufacturers make more informed decisions when evaluating emerging sustainable materials.

Through practical insights and case studies, Sam will demonstrate the value that rapid biodegradation screening brings to the plastics industry, as a reliable way to save both time and money during development cycles.

Through Impact-Bio®, Impact Solutions is helping manufacturers navigate that transition with greater clarity, confidence and technical insight.

Find Impact Solutions on stand S68 at Interplas, NEC Birmingham, 2nd to 4th June 2026.
