RW Simon Improves Sustainability with £1.3million Equipment Investment
Leading ancillary supplier Labotek GB recently installed a comprehensive material conveying and blending system for its customer, RW Simon Ltd, as part of the injection moulder’s £1.3million investment plan.
South West-based injection moulding company RW Simon specialises in designing, developing, and manufacturing thermoplastic mouldings and assemblies for various industries, such as fibre optic termination, biopharmaceuticals, medical and construction.
An important aim for the business is to minimise negative environmental impact by ensuring that they are not wasting material. Additionally, as polymer prices continue to rise, it enables RW Simon to remain as competitive as possible for their customers.
Declan Tattersall, RW Simon’s Tooling Engineer, commented:
“When moulding some of our products, we re-introduce the runner and sprue from the moulding process via an automated de-spruing process; on some parts, we can re-introduce up to 48% regrind back into the process via the closed loop system we have designed to ensure there is no material being wasted.
“RW Simon uses Ferlin Gravimetric Blenders to reintroduce the regrind directly into the barrel’s throat as part of a close loop system. They also have a Labotek “Microscan” central feed system to feed the regrind, virgin, and masterbatch materials dosing units. This is part of a £1.3m investment that included three Engel Victory 300 moulding machines.
“This recent investment has increased the number of Ferlin Blenders to 14, all supplied with Labotek single hopper loaders.
“With proven onsite reliability and accuracy, the Ferlin Gravimetric Blenders have delivered years of service. Their unique design makes them easy to clean and to programme, resulting in reduced downtime when we carry out material changes.
“We were also presented with the option of using Ferlin Bridge software to monitor material throughput with live external updates from the Ferlin gravimetric dosing unit.
“All of this is backed by the years of the superb after-sales support from Labotek GB.” Declan concluded.
