IPL’s Chris Andrew Wins Unsung Hero Award
IPL Rotherham’s Head Supervisor, Chris Andrew, is honoured to have received the prestigious Unsung Hero Award at the Plastics Industry Awards 2021.
IPL received five finalist nominations for the Plastics Industry Awards 2021. Award winners were announced at a black-tie event in London on December 2, with Chris Andrew winning in the Unsung Hero category.
The Plastics Industry Awards, which celebrated its twentieth anniversary in 2021, is an annual event held in London dedicated to rewarding innovation and exceptional performance within the plastics industry. Judged by a panel of industry experts, entries are across sixteen categories covering materials usage, product design, manufacturing excellence, training, and environmental performance.
IPL was awarded finalist for five entries in four categories:
- Best Environmental or Energy Efficiency Initiative
- Best Business Initiative
- Best Training and Development Programme
- Unsung Hero – Steppen Dennis
- Unsung Hero – Chris Andrew

Congratulations to all deserving award winners, and a special mention to Steppen Dennis from IPL Rotherham for achieving finalist in the Unsung Hero category.
Steppen has been described as “the kind of colleague everyone wants – reliable, loyal, hardworking and supportive,” and as someone who “puts others before himself, and routinely goes above-and-beyond what is expected of him and is a true team player.”
Chris Andrew – Unsung Hero Award Winner
The Unsung Hero Award category aims to recognise a staff member who goes out of their way for the business and deserves greater acknowledgement for their efforts that go above the norm.
Therefore, IPL is delighted to announce that Chris Andrew, Head Supervisor at the Rotherham site, has been named as the Plastics Industry’s Unsung Hero 2021!
Chris is one of IPL Rotherham’s longest-serving employees, having worked for IPL and previously MGB for over 30 years. However, it is Chris’ attitude and outstanding service during the past 12 months which have led to his efforts receiving national recognition.
Chris is an essential part of the Rotherham site’s day-to-day activities. Chris and his team are responsible for ensuring the continued supply of wheeled bins to UK streets, facilitating recycling infrastructure, ensuring valuable resource preservation, and keeping our streets clean, safe and hazard-free. Thanks to the work of Chris and his team, these bins are always produced on time and delivered seamlessly to households across the UK.
During the COVID-19 period, IPL was inundated with customer orders on tight deadlines. An increase in time spent at home meant demand for wheeled bins for household waste and bins for gardening waste shot through the roof. It was down to Chris and his team’s hard work that IPL consistently hit these deadlines in a challenging period.
Praising Chris, Operations Manager Jon Smith said: “Chris is the type of person who makes things happen. A reliable individual who you can count on time and time again to get things done to the highest standard.”
With no obligation to work outside of his contracted working hours (Monday – Friday), Chris worked an astonishing 18 weekends in a row to ensure production schedules were met during this busy period. This included 12 hours every Saturday and displays Chris’ incredible commitment and work ethic.
Jon Smith added: “Chris continuously put the business first; he took all the correct protocols to ensure that he and his team were safe to continue working throughout the pandemic. This included successfully implementing one-way systems and new workflows around the factory, which goes far above and beyond his duties as Head Supervisor.”
Due to his hard work, fantastic attitude and sheer commitment, Chris deserves this national recognition, and the IPL Group is delighted that his efforts have been formally recognised by the Plastics Industry Awards judging panel.
