KraussMaffei UK is set to demonstrate a complete, real-world circular economy solution at Interplas 2026, held at the NEC Birmingham from 2nd to 4th June 2026. The exhibit will centre on a live production cell designed to showcase the commercial viability of sustainable materials in high-volume injection moulding.
A Functional Sustainability Story
Produced in partnership with Solinatra, the cell will manufacture a full set of compostable cutlery, including a knife, fork, spoon, and spork. These items are made from 100% natural, plant-based engineered materials, demonstrating how innovative bio-composites can be used to create functional, high-quality products that meet the rigorous standards of modern brands.
The cutlery will be manufactured using Solinatra’s ‘Universal Food’ grade, a high-performance material specifically engineered for food-contact applications. This 100% natural alternative is both home and industrially compostable, breaking down as naturally as a banana skin without leaving behind microplastics or harmful pollutants. Unlike many bio-materials, this specific grade offers the high heat resistance and rigidity required for functional cutlery, ensuring a premium user experience. Furthermore, the material is designed to be “drop-in” ready, allowing it to be processed on standard injection moulding machinery with existing tooling.
This demonstration forms the focal point of KraussMaffei’s three-zone booth strategy, which organises the stand into dedicated areas: the Machine Area, the Technology & Process Area, and the Services Area. This structure is designed to provide visitors with a clear and comprehensive look at how machinery, specialised processing, and lifecycle support combine to drive production efficiency and sustainability.
Circular Economy in Action
To bring this sustainability story to life, the cutlery sets are being packaged in paper sleeves with included napkins. To prove the real-world functionality, attendees are invited to visit the stand to collect a complimentary set to use at the exhibition’s food outlets, allowing them to experience the quality and durability of the product firsthand.
Efficiency Without Compromise
The production itself will be powered by the latest generation of the all-electric PX injection moulding machine. A key technical highlight of the cell is the robot, which is integrated entirely within the machine’s footprint to maximise productivity while significantly reducing the required factory floor space. This compact efficiency allows manufacturers to maintain high-output production within a streamlined environment.
“With the new all-electric PX series, KraussMaffei offers its customers real added value: lower operating and energy costs, higher productivity, and maximum flexibility with minimal space requirements,” explains Richard Mumford, Sales Director of KraussMaffei UK.
“By producing and distributing functional cutlery sets made from natural materials, we are proving that sustainable manufacturing is a ready-to-implement reality for our customers.”
KraussMaffei UK invites all Interplas attendees to visit Stand L98 / L100 in Hall 10 to witness this end-to-end circular solution. Book a demonstration by contacting the KraussMaffei UK team.
